On Nilcompactifications of Prime Spectra of Commutative Rings

Given a ring R and S one of its ideals, we obtain a compactification of the prime spectrum of S through a mainly algebraic process. We name it the R-nilcompactification of SpecS. We study some categorical properties of this construction.Comment: 12 pages, 8 Tikz figure

Strong electronic correlation in the Hydrogen chain: a variational Monte Carlo study

    Get PDF
In this article, we report a fully ab initio variational Monte Carlo study of the linear, and periodic chain of Hydrogen atoms, a prototype system providing the simplest example of strong electronic correlation in low dimensions. In particular, we prove that numerical accuracy comparable to that of benchmark density matrix renormalization group calculations can be achieved by using a highly correlated Jastrow-antisymmetrized geminal power variational wave function. Furthermore, by using the so-called "modern theory of polarization" and by studying the spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations functions, we have characterized in details the crossover between the weakly and strongly correlated regimes of this atomic chain. Our results show that variational Monte Carlo provides an accurate and flexible alternative to highly correlated methods of quantum chemistry which, at variance with these methods, can be also applied to a strongly correlated solid in low dimensions close to a crossover or a phase transition.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review

Estimation of the composite fast fading and shadowing distribution using the log-moments in wireless communications

In this work, we propose a framework to obtain estimators from a variety of distributions used in composite fast fading and shadowing modeling with applications in wireless communications: the Suzuki (Rayleigh-lognormal), Nakagami-lognormal, K (Rayleigh-gamma), generalized-K (Nakagami-gamma) and alpha-mu; (generalized gamma) distributions. These estimators are derived from the method of moments of these distributions in logarithmic units, usually known as log-moments. The goodness-of-fit of these estimators to experimental distributions has been checked from a measurement campaign carried out in an urban environment. Moreover a new method to separate fast fading and shadowing based on the Rathgeber procedure is proposed. The results conclude that the best-fitting distribution to the measurements is the Nakagami-lognormal. Also, the alpha-mu; distribution provides an acceptable matching with the advantage of its simplicity. The authors would like to thank the editor and reviewers their valuable comments which have enriched the quality of this paper. On Simple Estimators of the alpha-mu Fading Distribution

In this letter, new estimators of the alpha-mu distribution are derived based on the skewness of the logarithmic alpha-mu distribution using the moments method. This distribution has been recently proposed to model the received field strength in nonlinear propagation mediums. Therefore, simple and computationally efficient estimators are required to infer the parameters of the received signal amplitude distribution in nonlinear wireless communication propagation channels. The performance of these new estimators is compared to that obtained with the estimators calculated with the moments method of the alpha-mu distribution by solving numerically transcendental equations. These estimators are easily evaluated with simple expressions.Reig, J.; Rubio Arjona, L. (2011). On Simple Estimators of the alpha-mu Fading Distribution. Analytical Approach to Model the Fade Depth and the Fade Margin in UWB Channels

In this letter, the variations of the ultra-wideband (UWB) channel power as a function of the channel bandwidth are investigated. An analytical approach to characterize the fade depth and the fade margin due to small-scale fading in indoor environments is proposed. The approach is based on the IEEE 802.15.4a ultra-wideband channel model and the assumption that the channel power can be modeled by a Gamma distribution. This analytical approach is checked by comparison with results derived through Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the fade depth and the fade margin are closely related to the channel bandwidth. This analytical approach can be used to design and implement UWB communications systems.Rubio Arjona, L.; Reig, J.; Rubio Arjona, L. (2010). Analytical Approach to Model the Fade Depth and the Fade Margin in UWB Channels. IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. 59(9):4214-4221. doi:10.1109/TVT.2010.2070815S4214422159

NGC 6309, a Planetary Nebula that Shifted from Round to Multipolar

We present new narrow-band Ha, [N II], and [O III] high-resolution images of the quadrupolar planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6309 that show in great detail its bipolar lobes and reveal new morphological features. New high- and low-dispersion long-slit spectra have been obtained to help in the investigation of the new nebular components. The images and spectra unveil two diffuse blobs, one of them located at 55 arcsec from the central star along the NE direction (PA= +71) and the other at 78 arcsec in the SW direction (PA= -151). Therefore, these structures do not share the symmetry axes of the inner bipolar outflows. Their radial velocities relative to the system are quite low: +3 and -4 km/s, respectively. Spectroscopic data confirm a high [O III] to Ha ratio, indicating that the blobs are being excited by the UV flux from the central star. Our images convincingly show a spherical halo 60 arcsec in diameter encircling the quadrupolar nebula. The expansion velocity of this shell is low, 66 km/s. The software SHAPE has been used to construct a morpho-kinematic model for the ring and the bipolar flows that implies an age of 4,000 yrs, the expansion of the halo sets a lower limit for its age 46,000 yrs, and the very low expansion of the blobs suggests they are part of a large structure corresponding to a mass ejection that took place 150,000 yrs ago. In NGC 6309 we have direct evidence of a change in the geometry of mass-loss, from spherical in the halo to axially-symmetric in the two pairs of bipolar lobes.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
